Phantasm is one of greatest horror series/franchises of our time. I like Phantasm because of the story, the music, the spheres, mainly everything. After watching all 4 you come to ask yourself questions of the why and how of the series. It's an enigma that grapples on to you and every minute is exciting, enjoyable, frightening, and memorable. Every scene, every character has a moment you never want to forget. As a phan, my activities include making up some cool DVD ideas for thes series. I get out a pen and a notebook and just draw whatever I want to see. I post some of my Phantasm DVD ideas on other message boards too. Since 2007, I've became a phan and it was the best choice I've made as part of the horror genre (I have Anchor Bay's 2007 DVD release of Phantasm to thank for that). I used to (non-stop on this board) talk about the possibility of Phantasm II on R1 DVD (which some might find annoying). It wasn't until June of this year I've read on a message board that Phantasm II was finally coming to R1 DVD finally completinmg my Phantasm DVD collection. Anyway, the phan life is pretty sweet! Now that I completed my Phantasm DVD colelction, what's next? Many possibilities of Phantasm V, Bubba Nosferateu, and the films on US Blu-Ray (including Bubba-Ho Tep and the DVD release of Jim, The World's Greatest). There's talk of a secret Phantasm project going around which gets me excited! As I said, being a phan is the best and I think all new comers should spread the word of the series.

Ste,

What an interesting topic for a dissertation. I would be very interested to read your completed work. My suggestion to you would be to examine the connection between Phantasm's content/message and the age at which most viewers see the film. Many phans discovered Phantasm during or around their teenage years (as I did) and as such were able to empathize with the Mike Pearson character very easily. His youthful angst, familial loss and isolation made him quite endearing.

The phenomenon of Phantasm-related events is also something worth looking into. Upon release in 1979, the film was a success in walk-in theaters but really brought in the crowds upon it's release to the drive-in theaters. The drive-in box office numbers I've come across were staggeringly better than the walk-in theaters.

Since Phantasm's original release, horror movie conventions have become the norm for phan-gatherings across the country. Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Miami, Kentucky, New Jersey and others. Many of the filmmakers and cast members show up for these to meet and greet the phans.

Good luck with your project.

Exactly. Phantasm is the Lost of horror franchises.

It's hard to pinpoint exactly why I like the original and it's sequels. It's just such a great original storyline, love the Tall Man, so iconic. Love the idea of the evil emanating from such a highly respected place like a mortuary which many people put their trust in, only sometimes to be broken. There are many true news stories of desecrations happening at mortuaries to families and I think Don tapped into this mistrust and heinous things that have happened. For example, I've got an old Geraldo show on funeral home scandals that would make a good horror film any day! Rotting bodies stacked like wood kindling in mortuary offices, etc. I've also been blessed having the opportunity to work on 2 of the sequels and sort of being able to live out the movie so to speak.

As Dustin said, I discovered the series late in my teens and thought is was so far from the usual horror movies out there. Some wonderful shot sequences, stunts and really touching moments. But what really did stick with me was just how normal and down to earth all the charachters seemed to be. Something bad would happen, they fire a load of bullets at it and then run off. I thought, that's exactly what a normal person would do! None of this stupid screaming and running around you find in the slasher movies. I've loved it for years and since coming to this forum, there's so much more that I've leant about the movies. It's really the only set of films that has drawn my interst this much.

Hmmm...A University dissertation.

Well I think Dustin and Scube hit it right.

I first watched Phantasm right on the cusp of turning teen. And you do view the movie through the eyes of Mike.

To that extent, Michael Baldwin is right up there in terms of bravery as Swartzeneggar and Stallone were to me in later years.

Fold in some good ole' fashion family values, which really paralleled my own youth, and there you have it.

Jody and his best friend Reggie really cared about protecting young Mike, something you don't really see in the characters of today's horror movies or culture.

And of course, the kick arse soundtrack.

Another great thing is that the actors/actresses all seem like like really great people who care a lot about the phans and films and each other. I doubt whether you'd get that from a lot of hollywood celebs. That's really endearing

Forgot to say that I've done a couple of fan fics as well
