Coscarelli Talks Phantasm Remake, Sequels « Thread Started on Oct 16, 2009, 7:53pm »
Quote:
It's the 30th anniversary of Phantasm, Don Coscarelli's '79 film featuring the Tall Man, silver spheres, a gun-toting ice cream man and evil imps. To celebrate, the L.A. Times sat down with Coscarelli, Angus Scrimm and Reggie Bannister for a retrospective interview and, naturally, remake and sequel talk came up.
Of a possible remake, Coscarelli comments, "I get a phone call every week, it seems, from somebody who wants to do it. It's something I've been resisting for a while. I do think that, given the proper context, it would really be exciting to see what a younger filmmaker could bring to that story. It's something I'm open to but I guess I’m seeking the right circumstances. Takashi Miike doing Phantasm, how would that be? Anything that would ever be done would have to be done with sensitivity to the appreciation that the fans have for it. They just worship Angus as the Tall Man and Reggie as the loyal trusted friend."
On the subject of another sequel, "It's something we've talked about through the years but the timing hasn't worked out or getting the finances exactly right," he says. "I've been cooking up a couple of incarnations of things that I can’t talk about now but hopefully in the near future we could get something in the Phantasm world happening."
Scrimm adds he would jump at the chance to reprise his role as the Tall Man.

That's interesting about what he says on a remake. But essentially everything Don said in this interview is the same regurgitated thing we've been hearing forever.

xScrimmshotx,
That photo and the news associated with it first originated here on Phantasm Community. There is indeed a secret Phantasm project and that photo of Reggie is most definitely from it, though it was snapped many months ago.

I see, I've been out of the loop on any and all news lately it seems. Looks good, looks good....

Hey there xscrimshotx, I think we've chatted about Phantasm on the imdb boards before! Small (virtual) world.
Well, we know that Reggie is involved in this secret project. My big question is... is Coscarelli? I don't know what I'd think about a Phantasm project that Don wasn't involved in.

Think I remember that, hemicuda. Nice to see you again.
I was just thinking something about this "project" and the way some professional artists are going about marketing their music online these days, selling digital downloads of their albums (like what Radiohead have done with one of their recent albums, where they allowed fans to pay as much as they want or what they think it's worth). What if a filmmaker (such as Mr. Coscarelli) were to film "webisodes" and go this route, maybe offering digital downloads of each webisode for $5-$10? I was just curious as to what other fans would think about this...
